Coronavirus: Return to education and school transport

Below is some information prepared by Rutland County Council's Transport Team for parents and carers, regarding their child's school transport.

As our schools and other education provisions are welcoming children back to school and more students will need transport, the work of the Rutland County Council Transport Team will become even more important for our children and young people and their families.

In order for us to help you as best we can, the Transport team will require two working days to get in place plans to re-start school transport. This will give the Transport team time to plan the safest and most appropriate transport service for children and young people under the current Covid19 advice and working circumstances.

We ask that parents and carers contact your child’s SEND Case Officer with details of when you require your transport to start and case officers will liaise with the Transport Operations team to provide your transport service.

The Team will be operating transport services in-line with the latest government guidance, and will also be asking that all passengers/parents read it.

The transport service will be operating to the following capacities to observe distancing as much as is possible, with unused seating marked up as “out of use”:

  • Standard Taxi – 1 passenger
  • 7-8 seater – 1 or 2 passengers (actual vehicle dimensions and passengers to be considered on a case by case basis)
  • Small minibus – 2 passengers
  • 14-17 seat minibus – 3 passengers
  • Buses/coaches – to operate to a seating capacity of 25% of usual capacity.

Enhanced vehicle cleaning will be in place.

The use of any PPE for transport staff will be in-line with the government guidance and parents/students should read the guidance for safe travel and make their own assessment of PPE they feel they wish to wear. This will not be enforced by the transport service.

Individual parents will be contacted with details of how the transport will operate and different cases may require different approaches, as the one-size fits all approach is never applicable to transporting students with additional needs. Needless to say, the team will communicate with parent/carers whenever required to achieve the safest and most suitable arrangements for travel.

Any specifics concerns/queries can be emailed to at any time and they will work with parent/carers closely.
