Positive support for children and parents with special needs and disabilities in Rutland

Autism Support Group for parents and carers

The monthly Rutland ‘Autism Support Group’ and ‘Introduction to Autism’ workshops have been very well attended by parents and carers, since going online, with 67 parents and carers attending since the beginning of the Covid 19 Pandemic. In a recent survey 94% of attendees stated that the sessions helped them to better understand autism as well as helping them to understand and manage their child’s behaviour.

In response to feedback from parents, recent topics covered at the support group have included managing sleep, diet, anxiety, and autism in girls.

Rutland Disabled Youth Forum

The work of Rutland Disabled Youth Forum continues, with the group meeting fortnightly on Zoom. The group became well known to ‘KIDS’ (a national organisation supporting children’s participation and influencing services), in 2020 and culminated in two members of the group supporting ‘KIDS’ with some training sessions for a London Borough Council. Currently, they are working on a number of programmes - with our Community Safety team to re-establish the ‘Keep Safe’ scheme, their feedback is helping to design the LLR work on the Neurodevelopmental Pathway and they are helping Rutland’s independent and advice service, SENDIASS, to create resources to support children and young people at their annual reviews.
