Rutland Information Service

Autism Support

This service supports children and adolescents who are being assessed for an underlying condition, or who have a diagnosis of autism (or Asperger’s).

This may include children who are showing signs of difficulty socially or emotionally, or presenting with unusual or concerning behaviour.

The views of this service contribute to the local multi-disciplinary diagnostic process, known as the Autism Pathway, with colleagues from the NHS and Educational Psychologists.

Information and advice is provided to staff in schools, tailored to the individual child’s needs. An important part of the role is to visit pre-school settings (playgroups, nurseries, childcare) to identify any additional needs a child may have as early as possible.

Where appropriate, evidence gathered by this service can contribute to an Education, Health & Care Plan.

The service is conscious of the need to ensure that staff across the county are aware of the needs of all children, and training sessions are available on a regular basis to all schools and pre-school settings. Again, these are targeted to best suit the needs of the school or setting.

Family support is also part of this service, to help parents and families to understand their child’s diagnosis and how it affects their child and their behaviour; and advise strategies and approaches that are known to be effective.

A regular Autism Network meeting is held for parents and carers, hosted by the Aiming High service. This provides a relaxed environment for parents to share experiences, and to choose topics they want to be addressed. If requested, we can arrange for a speaker to join the group for an expert view on a particular subject.
