A health visitor is a qualified nurse or midwife who has undertaken additional training to become a specialist community public health nurse which includes child development and health improvement.
Within the health visiting team there may also be community nursery nurses, health visitor assistants and admin support workers who may have contact
with a family.
Health visitors give confidential advice, care and support to families with babies and young children up to school age. The health visiting team is there for all families with pre-school age children.
We offer health assessments, advice and support on child, parenting and adult matters and act as a central point of contact for services available to the child and their family.
We monitor and promote the physical and emotional health of mothers, babies and the general health of their families.
This includes giving advice and support on:
• Breastfeeding
• General health
• Healthy weight
• Behavioural difficulties
• Child development
• Postnatal illness and emotional wellbeing
• Domestic violence
• Child protection.
