You may be able to access free transport to school for your child if they have special educational needs or are disabled.
Early years: Children below school age may be entitled to transport help in special circumstances.
Children aged 4 to 16: Travel is provided to the child’s nearest suitable school as advised by the Local Authority, not necessarily the school that is the choice of the parent. The child must also have a statement of special educational needs or an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan.
Post 16: Learners with EHC plans who have special educational needs in relation to transport will be considered on an individual basis. If a student meets the eligibility criteria, has an EHCP (but transport is not included), or no current EHCP, a parental contribution for transport assistance will be applicable.
There are some instances that would mean a student was not eligible so please contact your case worker or the transport team to discuss your individual needs.
For a basic guide to eligibility please see below:
Your child has an EHCP
Your child is attending the school allocated by the Local Authority
You live more than 2 miles from school if your child is up to 11 years old
You live more than 3 miles from school if your child is 11 to 16 years old
There are exceptions to the eligibility criteria so contact your case worker for information.
